Ebola in New York...What We Know

Dr. Craig Spencer's picture from Facebook

Dr. Craig Spencer worked with Doctors Without Borders and had just recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea....returning through New York's JFK International Airport. While Mayor Bill de Blasio states that very few people had contact with him, The New York Times reports that he traveled by subway from Manhattan to Brooklyn last night. He then visited a bowling alley and took a taxi home. It is reported that he was self-monitoring and checking his temperature regularly. This morning he had 103 fever and was admitted to Bellevue Hospital. This afternoon he tested positive for Ebola.

More to come.....

Military Funerals Cut....Where is the Honor??

A United States Veteran should have a funeral and burial full of honor.

According to the Department of Defense:

Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible Veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony, to include folding and presenting the United States burial flag and the playing of Taps. The law defines a military funeral honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons, with at least one being a member of the Veteran's parent service of the armed forces

Because of Federal budget cuts our Veteran's will now have to go without the final salute they so greatly deserve. Of course, there will probably be many volunteer organizations and individuals that step up and try to close the gap, but should this not be the responsibility of our government to step up and show appreciation for the sacrifice and service? If our government can provide food stamps and welfare to those who can afford I phones, Escalades and weekly nail appointments is it asking too much to give these brave men and women one last ceremonious send off?

Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is calling the Obama Administration out and asking for a reversal of these cuts. The reductions are a result of the across-the-board reductions enacted by Congress, known as sequestration. I think we all remember the sequestration. This was when the President closed down the public memorials and tried to barricade the Veteran's from visiting. They may have been enacted by Congress but Jindal's office claims that the Obama Administration chose what was cut and how.

This is appalling and every American should be standing up and saying NO MORE! Our men and women have sacrificed and fought enough. It's OUR turn...we should stand and fight for them. This total lack of respect for our Military needs to stop now.

Prepping Tidbits....Great Links to Info

100 Items That Disappear First in a Crisis
http://www.thepowerhour.com/news/items_disappearfirst.htm

In the event of a Ebola crisis or any other kind of Pandemic it would be very important to know how to isolate a sick family member or create a "sick room"

Prepping 101....NOT Doomsday...Just Common Sense

First of all let me begin by making it clear I am no Doomsday Prepper. While the show can be entertaining and may even make some people THINK, I can not imagine one person with common sense going on national TV and telling the world what they have and where it is. With that being said and out of the way, I will say that I believe EVERYONE should at least have some kind of game plan in their head to care for their family in a "what if" crisis.

What if ISIS does blah, blah, blah....
What if there's a problem with the water.....
What if we have a hurricane....
What if we are without power for extended time....
What if there is a huge ice storm....
What if Ebola or Enterovirus 68 spreads.....
What if my spouse looses his/her job....

I think you get the picture. There are 1001 scenarios that could seriously disrupt your household at any given time. Have you though it out or are you leaving it to chance? Any responsible person with half a brain in their head has to realize that depending on the Government or any other entity to take care of you and yours would be a foolhardy plan. They may come, but it could take a lot of precious time with all of the red-tape. Remember Katrina?? Remember Sandy?

"Prepping" does not make you a right-wing extremist. Look at it as an investment. If you pick up extra cans or boxes here and there, and a month down the line your spouse looses his/her job you will be thankful you had provisions set aside. If you continue building a reasonable stockpile and there is an illness in the home you won't have to leave to get soups or meds. I know of many times when I have been caring for sick children and husband is working. I couldn't take off to the store, but I was OK because I had what was needed because I planned ahead.

Now that we have discussed a few logical disruptions, we need to discuss the out-of-the-ordinary scenarios....

At this very moment we have had 2 confirmed cases of Ebola and several that the Government transferred here. Never in history has Ebola been on American soil. This deadly disease has the potential to claim many lives if something is not done. Remember what we just discussed about waiting on Government? Well in this case they are not coming to help us...they seem to be helping the disease. Air travel to and from the infected countries are non-stop. Our borders are wide open. Not only are we concerned with Ebola, but we are also dealing with Enterovirus 68. This nasty virus has claimed many young children and we have not even hit flu season. Everything has a cause and effect. Public panic could very well be lurking around the corner. It would not be so far-fetched to wake up and see that there are several confirmed cases and that could light a fire under the general public. Do YOU want to try to battle the folks at Walmart, Costco or Sam's who are scared beyond belief? I don't like battling Sally and Sue at Walmart on Saturday, and I certainly have no desire to be fighting for the last gallon of water or can of soup.

Walmart and other major grocery chains look like they have an abundance of stock, but the actual truth is that there is only enough stock for about 2-3 days. Where do they get their stock? Truckers. If you were a trucker would you put yourself in harm's way during some sort of crisis to transport a load to a grocery store or from a warehouse? I wouldn't. So what happens when the trucks don't arrive? Hmmmm...something to think about.

Of course some may say this is taking it to the extreme....maybe so....but it is a thought process. It's kind of like thinking what am I going to do if I run out of gas before I get to the gas station. Working out different scenarios to see if you could make it is only prudent.

Here's another scenario.....

You decide you'll start picking up some extra items. You start researching and making a list. You organize your closets and pantry. After making some progress you decide to talk about what you have accomplished with your neighbor down the street. Surely they have thought about the same because the nightly news is not getting better. If they haven't gotten a clue yet then you will be the good Samaritan who helps them or enlightens them. Don't be too upset when you get "that" look. You can tell by their facial expressions and body language they are uncomfortable and they may just flat out laugh it off and say something like "if something happens we'll know to just come to your house." Let this be a warning and red flag to you. In the event of a crisis the people who blow you off as a nut will be the first people knocking on your door wanting food for their kids. These are the people who stop at the store everyday to get supper and never have more than a day or two worth of food on hand. These are the people who will be angry and not think twice about taking food from your child's mouth to feed their own. This might be another scenario you want to think through. What will you do? Will you turn people away? My suggestion is to not let anyone know what you have or don't have.

There is no set way of doing any of this. There is no right way or wrong way....just get started. No one will love or care for your family the way that you do. Don't take a chance on having to rely on someone else to do it for you. Do something....even if it is just a little bit.

Kansas City, Kansas....This Could Be Another Real Deal

On Monday morning a man in his 40's came to the University of Kansas Hospital with various symptoms including high fever. The patient works as a medic on a commercial ship off the coast of West Africa and had been treating patients with many different ailments including fevers and diarrhea. Because there was no way for him to test any of the patients for Ebola, it was impossible for him to say if he had been in contact with anyone infected. It is estimated that he returned to the United States about 5 days ago and had fever, chills and vomiting when he arrived. He is presently being isolated in a special area as tests are run to determine exactly what his diagnosis may be. Officials are listing him as a low to moderate risk of actually having Ebola.

Watching this one closely....

Prepping for Ebola or Any Other Disease ....A Place to Start

I have recently been asked by several friends how to get ready for Ebola. Prepping for Ebola is a little different then other prepping scenarios.

The goal is:
1) Get ahead of the game and avoid the public panic
2) Be prepared to shelter-in-place

You don't want to be out in a crowd trying to fight for the stuff you need. Shelter-in-place may be a decision that you and your family makes....not necessarily the Government. When the Government makes that announcement we are really in trouble.

The following list is just a "start". This list does not cover total breakdown of society such as no utilities or sanitation.

1) WATER (fill up your 2 ltr soda bottles to help save on expense) You need 1 gallon per person per day.

2) Can goods, box goods, rice, dried beans.....things like chili, ravioli, chicken and dumplings, soups would be perfect b/c it's a meal in a can - keep in mind that some things you need water to cook and prepare accordingly

3) Canned meat like spam is great to put in beans for flavor, tuna, chicken etc (check Dollar Stores)

4) Snacks, pop tarts, cereal, crackers

5) Chicken and beef broth or boullion

6) Pet food and supplies

7) Not a bad idea to stock the freezer and fridge. If it gets to where there is no power then we are really screwed but this list is not for that "phase"

8) Sodas, Drinks, Flavor packets for water, Gatorade, Sprite or Ginger Ale

9) rubber gloves for cleaning and also rubber gloves they use in hospital. I found both at Dollar Tree

10) Garbage bags and plastic store bags for small garbage cans

11) Bleach

12) Detergent...don't want to get caught with nothing to wash clothes; Cleaning Supplies

13) Hand sanitizers and plenty of hand soap

14) Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, saline solution)

15) OTC meds....the last place your want to go is to a Dr. office or hospital. If you have children you will need to prepare for both.....Tylenol, Motrin, Cold Medicines, Stomach Meds, Pedialyte or something similar, Alcohol, Peroxide, Vit C

16) Toilet Paper

17) Surgical Masks

18) Bullets

19) Entertainment for kiddos; Batteries

20) If you get down to this point then go get more water and bleach....you can't have too much

Approach this with a clear head and try to think through every possible scenario. Lots to think about....lots to do.....Get busy!

Picking and Chopping Cotton the New Criteria for Being Democrat According to Bennie Thompson

Mississippi Congressman, Bennie Thompson, recently showed his support for a fellow Democrat running for Mayor in Greenwood, Mississippi. At the annual Beans and Greens Dinner sponsored by the Leflore County Democratic Executive Committee, Thompson spoke about many issues that should be gaining national attention and outrage.

Democrat mayoral candidate, Sheriel Perkins, was defeated in the 2013 race by Independent Mayoral Incumbent Carolyn McAdams. McAdams beat Perkins in the general election by 206 votes, but Perkins husband, Willie Perkins an attorney, is challenging the elections claiming various voter irregularities. While challenging election results is not at all uncommon, some of the views and opinions of the high-profile Democratic Congressman, Bennie Thompson, should be very questionable.

In his speech at the Beans and Greens Dinner he claimed that no one could be Independent and must be Democrat or Republican. He claims that anyone says they are anything other than one or the other they are a liar. He backs up his theory of "middle of the road" politicians with a very colorful statement. "You know what's in the middle of the road - yellow paint and dead armadillos." As if this weren't insulting enough to all common-sense voters, he continued.

According to Bennie Thompson, being a member of the Democratic Party means "you know about picking cotton, you know about chopping cotton, you know about dual education". I know many Democrats who would dispute this. I would also venture to assume that Bennie Thompson has never been forced to pick nor chop cotton in his life. As far as a dual education he chose to attend two predominately black colleges: Tougaloo College in 1968 and Jackson State University in 1973. It is important to note that although these are predominately black colleges they offer an outstanding curriculum to all races that apply as do other prestigious colleges in the state.

Not only did Bennie Thompson change the dynamic of the Democratic Party with this speech, he also managed to insult and question the Governor's faith because of decisions and views on Medicaid expansion. These such attacks add no credence to his argument, but only undermines his stance by taking cheap shots on a the Governor's personal faith. This speaks volumes on Thompson's lack of character.

As if this was not enough, Thompson further played the race card on the recent breach of security at the White House. He stated, "We had to run the Secret Service Lady off because they wouldn't protect him. We never had that problem with George Bush, never had that problem with Ronald Reagan." Maybe Thompson needs to be reminded Reagan was shot and there were other security issues with each, but maybe not as publicized.

The most incomprehensible accusations that has come from this man who is sitting in position of power, is the fact that he believes that the recent Ebola victim and his family were a victim of racial discrimination. Anyone with common sense knows that Ebola respects no race. The very idea that medical personnel would give him less than adequate care because of his race is ludicrous. The idea that putting the family in isolation is somehow cruel and discriminatory is beyond imaginable! If he is so concerned with the treatment of the family then maybe he should invite them to be house guest in his home.

It should be a concern of all Mississippians as well as Americans that this man has any kind of voice and power to make decisions regarding any kind of policy. Just this one speaking engagement has shown that he is not interested in uniting but only in dividing. He is not a man for the people, but a man for only some people.

Exposed to Ebola but Cleared for Work

Thirty-five year old Youngor Jallah of Dallas, TX found herself in the middle of a disease-infested nightmare these past few weeks. Jallah, a Nursing Assistant and the "step-daughter" of Ebola patient Thomas Duncan, was called to the home of her Mother and soon-to-be step father on September 28.

Her Mother asked her to bring breakfast and check on Duncan. When she got there she found him laying in bed with 104 fever. She went to Walmart to get a blanket and eventually called the ambulance. Jallah rode in the ambulance with her Step Father after his violent vomiting and she also carried the contaminated blanket. Jallah warned the Paramedics to be careful of touching the blanket because Duncan had come from West Africa and she was worried about viruses. Her husband, Aaron Yah who is also a Nursing Assistant, also had limited contact with Duncan.

Despite the close and prolonged contact with Duncan, Jallah was cleared by the CDC to return to work yesterday. However, she says that she will most likely not go. She plans to keep her son home until October 17, and with her Mother being in quarantine at a private location, she has no childcare.
The idea that the CDC would actually clear a medical worker to work with the public after coming in close contact with an Ebola patient is absolutely unbelievable. With this latest judgement call I find it impossible not to question their actions.

Anti-Semantic Tirade in the Heart of Dixie

Racism…we hear about it all the time. In the South it is almost always assumed to be a white on black issue. This past week proved different.

Rabbi Ted Riter had a craving for Greek food and headed to a local establishment known as “Wraps” at Maywood Mart in Jackson, MS. With his sermon for Rosh Hashanah in hand for editing while he ate, he headed to the counter to order his meal. What he received was a complete tongue lashing from the owner.

According to the local newspaper, The Clarion Ledger, the Rabbi ordered the Greek salad. John Ellis, the owner, then asked him if he wanted “a full size or a Jewish size.” The Rabbi thought he may have heard the man wrong, but Ellis explained that the Jewish size “was small because they are cheap.”  Rabbi Riter was so shocked by this statement that he asked Ellis if he was serious. At this point Ellis began to shout expletives and racial slurs at Rabbi Riter. Ellis ran the Rabbi out of the store!

Ellis at first denied the incident, but then changed his story and blamed the Rabbi for being rude and disrespecting his establishment. According to many comments on local media Facebook pages there were witnesses to the incident. All of these witnesses validated the Rabbi’s account. Other posters mentioned incidents that they witnessed with other customers in the past.

Hopefully the public will take a stand and find another place to eat in the future. There is no room in America for this kind of behavior.

Hypothetical Nightmare or Possible Reality?

Note: This is ONLY Hypothetical salt and peppered with some reality. This is straight up FICTION

Man who lives in West Africa decides to come to the US.  Just a few days before leaving he helps take his landlord's daughter to a hospital where she dies. The landlord's son dies the next day and it's possible a few people in the neighborhood die as well. A few day's later this man, who we will call Patient Z, boards a flight with his visa and heads to America.

Patient Z grabs a cab on the morning of his flight. While in the cab he takes a Tylenol (or the equivalent). He feels a little under the weather...maybe a small cold and some sniffles. Every now and then he wipes his face or nose with his hand...no tissue.

Before boarding the plane they are checking people's temperature and being watchful for anyone who may shows signs of sickness. He thinks to himself how glad he is that he just has a small cold with runny nose and slight cough....nothing to really catch anyone's attention. He boards the plane and touches every other seat as he makes his way to his spot. Before opening the above hatch to load his suitcase, he coughs a little more. The flight is fine, although he feels a bit sluggish and makes his way to the restroom several times. The attendant comes by with the warm rags. It feels so good he wipes his face and neck down and gives it back to attendant. He eats the meal served on the plane although he doesn't have as much of an appetite. Again uses the napkin to wipe his nose.... and really wishes for some Kleenex, but the attendant brings him some more napkins.

When they leave the flight, he walks through the airport and stops in a gift shop to find some Kleenex and cold medicine. After this long flight the coughing and sneezing has gotten worst....he's really starting to feel bad. Patient Z picks up several different snacks before deciding against them all. He grabs a magazine...licks his fingers....and thumbs through it, but decides to put it back and go to the coffee shop. He's got a few minutes before his people get there to pick him up. As he sits with a nice hot cup of coffee he struggles to get the cold medicine open and tears it with his teeth.  In a moment of just sheer fatigue he lays his head on the table for just an instant and watches as his breath fogs up the table. Jet lag is horrible....surely after a good night sleep he'll feel better. It's about "that time" so he jumps up and heads off to meet his people....leaving a mess behind.

Meanwhile, the attendants are tidying up the plane for the next flight. One is cleaning up the towels and the other the dishes. They make their way through the aisle's to pick up any trash. Geez this one dude really used a lot of napkins! She picks them up one by one and puts them in the trash. She really doesn't have time for this and is aggravated at someone else's insane messiness.

In the gift shop a little boy runs up and grabs a candy bar that Patient Z had picked up and put down. Like many young kids, he is rubbing it on his face and trying to put in his mouth. Another guy picks up the magazine....flips through and puts it back. Not sure if he licks his finger when he flips the pages but the next guy does and buys the magazine.

Over at the coffee shop a young couple with a child happily grab Patient Z's table as soon as he moves. The coffee shop is so crowded they were lucky to get the table! As the young Dad gets the toddler strapped into the highchair, the young Mom disposes of the coffee cup, tissue and medicine wrapper left behind. She gently wipes the table with a dry napkin as the young toddler pounds his hands on the table....right where Patient Z had laid his head.

Patient Z is greeted with so much excitement from his family and friends. There are hugs and kisses to go around at least ten times. A big dinner and welcome party awaits him back at their place with even more family and some neighbor's. The house is packed with family and friends and some of the little kids keep running off with his drink thinking it is theirs. He sure hope's they don't catch this cold. The jet lag is really weighing on him so he excuses himself and goes to bed.

The next day is rough and his Aunt makes him some hot tea and uses some home remedies to help combat what is ailing him. His stomach is starting to hurt pretty bad as the day continues. He tries to tough-it-out and feels like a horrible house guest. The family thinks nothing of it. His Aunt loves waiting on him hand and foot. She rubs his head with a rag and believes that the horrible neighbor across the street must have brought some bad food. As the day turns into night the aches get really bad and he is running fever. It is decided that the very next morning he will go to the local emergency room to get checked out.

When he arrives at the emergency room, he waits for hours. The waiting room is packed and they are very busy. By this time his dry cough has turned into a wet hacking cough, his eyes are watering and he goes from burning up hot to having chills. He's gone through all of the Kleenex he bought at the gift shop, and has resorted to using his hand to wipe across his nose and brow. The aches and pain in his body is just awful. Rubbing his eyes helps relieve the burning, but they tear right back up. The only relief he gets is to walk a bit, but he feels so tired and the coughing makes him have to stop. He goes from sitting in one seat to another and leaning on the wall....just trying to get a comfortable spot until they call him back.

The triage nurse calls him back and checks his temperature. She tries to dispose of the thermometer cover in the trash and misses....she decides she will just pick it up later. They place Patient Z in a room and several nurses come in and get his vitals. Some wear gloves and some do not. Finally the Doctor comes in and after looking him over determines that he possibly has a sinus infection or even the flu and sends him home with some medicine. He and the family member catch a bus back home.

The bus is hot, stifling and crowded. It seems as if he may suffocate before getting off and his coughing gets worst. When they finally get off the bus and make it home he goes straight to bed. Throughout the night the pain gets worst...the chills are worst and his eyes are watering so heavily his face stays wet. His nose is running so badly that he wipes his face on anything that is laying around.

Day three become really bad. He has constant diarrhea and can barely keep down any fluids. He has become so weak, but his Aunt, Cousin and Uncle are right there wiping his brow and helping take care of him. By nightfall he is almost delirious and the vomiting has wiped him out. When he finally drifts off to sleep so does everyone else.

On day four they awake to the sound of banging and find him on the floor covered in his own fluids. He's unable to talk much and is very weak. They call an ambulance and it arrives minutes later to take hime to the same hospital he went to only two days before. The Aunt rides with them and the Cousin follows in the neighbor's borrowed vehicle. Because he can not talk very much the Cousin fills in information when he can't. They ask him for his social security card and he tries to explain he doesn't have one. The Cousin explains that he had just arrived a few days prior from Liberia. While they are taking more information, Patient Z turns and vomits blood.

The alarm bells go off for the hospital. People start scattering. The people who had been in the room are pulled and told to immediately suit up for a possible isolation situation. Ladies and Gentlemen.....we may have Ebola.

We indeed DID have Ebola. Although this is a hypothetical sequence of events, on a made-up timeline, from my rampant imagination but based on some facts....I hope it makes you THINK.

The CDC is quick to say that Ebola WILL BE contained. It is not transmitted through the air. No one is contagious unless they are symptomatic. These statements are contradictory to what has been already witnessed in many situations in West Africa. These statements are contradictory to many other statements that they have released.

Let's break it down:

It's not airborne......that means that it will not sprought wings and fly, but aerosol droplets of mucus and saliva are a different story. Those, along with sweat and tears carry Ebola and they can live on a surface for a number of days. http://www.msdsonline.com/resources/msds-resources/free-safety-data-sheet-index/ebola-virus.aspx

Is a Person Contagious During the Ebola Incubation Period?
Even if a person exhibits no signs or symptoms of Ebola, he or she can still spread the virus during the Ebola incubation period. Once Ebola virus symptoms begin, the person can remain contagious for about three more weeks.
THIS WOULD MEAN THAT ANYONE THAT HAD CONTACT DURING INCUBATION PERIOD...NOT JUST AFTER SYMPTOMS START COULD BE INFECTED

Now ask yourself...
1) What happened to the cab driver that took him to the airport?
2) What happened to the people who sat in his seat and rested their arms on the arm rest in the airport?
3) How many people touched the seats he touched after swiping his hand under his nose?
4) What about the flight attendants who took his ticket, took his warm rag, handled his dishes and picked up his discarded tissues?
5) What about all of the people on the flight that breathed the same re-circulated air that he was coughing and sneezing into. Those fluids landed somewhere....who touched them?
6) How about the restroom? Those toilets flush with such pressure it is proven that they shoot waste back out in droplets. Who went in after him?
7) Do you think the child with the candy bar could be at risk or the man who bought the magazine?
8) How would you feel knowing you had sat at a table that an Ebola victim had coughed and sneezed over and laid their head? Your child played patty-cake where his head "watched his breath fog the table". Your wife cleaned up the discarded tissues and medicine packet he opened with his mouth.
9) The family that smothered him with kisses. The kids who ran off with his drinks. The people who cleaned his dishes. The dutiful loving family that cared for him as any of us would have....all now exposed. In those few days who did they have contact with?
10) The people in the waiting area's both times....how many sat in his chair, used his arm rest after he sneezed and hacked? Where did they go off to? The healthcare workers who took care of him both times.....the ambulance workers.

All of these people that one person had contact with branch out and have contact with others. It forms a web....a very dangerous web. One more thing. If any of these individuals got sick in the next few days to weeks their travel history would not include West Africa....it would only be contact with a person that they never realized was contagious.

Get informed. Don't take someone else's word....come to your own conclusions based on your own research. You can not depend on anyone other than yourself to take care of your family.

God Bless those affected. God Bless the First Responders, God Bless Texas and God Bless America.
